Privacy
A Scoundrel’s Tale is a single-player game. You can install it and play the whole story without an account, without signing in and without giving us any personal data. Everything below describes the few optional cases where data does leave your device.
This policy covers the game (iOS, Android) and this website.
Who is responsible
The operator named in the Imprint is the controller for the processing described here. Contact: hello@scoundreltale.com.
Playing without an account
Your progress, settings, trophies and Chronicle are stored on your device only. We cannot see them, and they are removed when you delete the app.
The game does not require an internet connection to play.
Optional: signing in
If you choose “Sign in with Apple” or “Sign in with Google” in Options, an account is created for you on our backend. We receive and store the user ID the provider issues and, if you allow it, your email address. We use it for nothing but identifying your account — no newsletters, no marketing.
If you use Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we only ever see the relay address Apple generates.
Legal basis: performing the service you asked for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Optional: cloud save
While you are signed in, the game mirrors your local save file to your account so you can restore it after a reinstall or on another device. The upload contains game progress only — the same data the app keeps on your device.
Optional: leaderboard
If you pick a leaderboard name, that name (with the number appended to keep it unique) and your submitted scores and run statistics are shown publicly to other players in the game and may be shown on this website.
Please do not use your real name or anything identifying as your leaderboard name. Names can be reported in-app and offensive ones are removed.
Analytics
The game sends usage statistics to our own analytics system: which screens are opened, how runs progress, and the app version and build. This is how we find out where the game is too hard or breaks.
No advertising identifier (no IDFA/AAID) is used, there is no cross-app or cross-site tracking, no advertising SDK, and nothing is shared with or sold to third parties. Events are never tied to your account, even while you are signed in. Device and session identifiers are salted hashes computed on our side; your IP address is processed only to derive them and a coarse country, and is not stored alongside events.
Analytics is off until you allow it: the game asks once, and collects nothing before you say yes. You can change your mind at any time under Options → Privacy → Analytics. Legal basis: consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you may withdraw with that switch.
Crash reports
If the game crashes or hits an unexpected error, it sends a report to our crash-reporting provider so the fault can be found and fixed. A report contains the error and its stack trace, the app version, build and update, the device model and OS version, and a trail of the last few in-game actions. It contains no account link, no email address, no leaderboard name, no save file and no IP address.
Crash reports are on by default, because a build that crashes for you is broken for everyone and we cannot fix what we cannot see. You can turn them off under Options → Privacy → Crash reports; that stops delivery immediately. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in a working, secure app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), which you may object to with that switch.
Crash reports are separate from Analytics and have their own switch. Turning Analytics on does not turn crash reports on, and turning Analytics off does not turn them off.
Deleting your account and your data
Signed in? Open Options → Cloud save → Delete account. That permanently deletes your account, your email address and provider ID, your cloud save, and your leaderboard name and scores. It cannot be undone. Your progress on the device stays where it is and keeps working offline.
You can also write to hello@scoundreltale.com and we will delete the account for you.
“Disconnect” only signs this device out; it does not delete anything.
How long we keep things
Account data, cloud saves and leaderboard entries are kept until you delete your account. Analytics events carry no account link and are kept for trend analysis. Crash reports carry no account link and are kept for up to 90 days.
Who processes data for us
Accounts, cloud saves and leaderboards run on a hosted database platform that acts as our processor under a data processing agreement. Analytics runs on infrastructure we control. Crash reports go to a hosted error-monitoring provider acting as our processor under a data processing agreement. Sign-in itself happens with Apple or Google under their own privacy policies. We will name the providers on request.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, delete and export your data, to restrict or object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. Write to hello@scoundreltale.com. You may also complain to your data protection authority.
Children
The game is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from them. Signing in and the leaderboard are optional and can simply be left alone.
This website
The website sets no cookies and runs no advertising scripts. It counts page views with the same analytics system as the game, on the same terms described above. Standard server logs (IP address, requested page, time) are kept for security and troubleshooting.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will update the date above and note the change in the app’s release notes.
